오리노코 강의 ‘오리노코(Orinoco)’란 말은 원주민 구아라우노(Guarauno) 부족의 표현으로 ‘노를 저을 수 있는 곳’을 의미하며 베네수엘라 국토의 80% 와 콜롬비아 국토의 25%를 지나간다. 

 

 

 

 

오리노코 강의 발원지는 파리마 산맥으로 브라질과 베네수엘라의 국경선상에 있는 산맥이다. 여기에서 시작된 오리노코 강은 서북쪽으로 흐르며 피라마 산맥을 떠나 ‘야노스(Llanos) 라고 불리는 대초원으로 구불구불하게 지나면서 내려간다.

 

 

 

오리노코 강은 콜롬비아와 베네수엘라와의 국경을 따라 북서쪽으로 흐르다가 위의 사진처럼 아푸레 강과 합류하여 대서양으로 나가는데 전장 2,200㎞에 달하는 오리노코 강은 남아메리카에서 아마존 강과 파라나 강에 이어 세번째로 긴 강이다.
